Bikram Sambat (BS), also known as Vikram Samvat, is Nepal's official calendar system — a
Hindu lunisolar calendar believed to have been introduced by Emperor Vikramaditya. It is approximately
56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian (AD) calendar. For example,
2082 BS ˜ 2025–2026 AD. The Nepali New Year (Naya Barsha) falls on Baisakh 1, which is
typically
April 13 or 14 in the Gregorian calendar. Nepal uses BS for official documents, government records,
festivals,
and school years.

Unlike the Gregorian calendar where months have fixed lengths (28–31 days), BS months vary
from 29 to 32 days each year. This is because Bikram Sambat is a lunisolar calendar — month
lengths are recalculated each year based on astronomical solar and lunar cycles. For instance, Baisakh
(month
1) might be 31 days in one year and 32 in another. This is why you need accurate calendar data rather than a
simple arithmetic formula.

approximately 1943 AD to 2034 AD. This range covers the birth years of almost all living
Nepalis and is sufficient for passports, visa forms, DV Lottery, and official documents.
